Geological Information Management System Suite Effective geological information management is a requirement for all exploration companies ensuring timely completion of studies using all data available. Horizon has recognized this fact and places a great deal of emphasis on information management both for in-house work and as a service to clients.

Effective geological information requires the tools to do the work and well catalogued information. Horizon have spent a significant amount of research and development time producing a data management tool to do this work. This tool (GIMS) has been designed by geologists who understand the importance of rapid access to quality data retaining links to its original source.

The latest version of GIMS (GIMS Suite 2008) was released in October 2008. This comprises a number of modules that give following features:

  • Explorer – rapid data mining using GIS and Advanced Search Capability, Well data entry and viewing
  • Library – record cataloguing, check-in/check-out, physical asset management
  • Analysis – loading and viewing analytical data sets (biostratigraphy, geochemistry etc)
  • Workset – save, import and export data sets and search results and associated files
  • Shortcut – manage digital files on a server
  • Manager – establish Users, User rights and Data Sets

GIMS utilizes a unique Data Source Concept to allow tracking of all stored data and associated interpretations.

Data Types

GIMS can incorporate the following data types:
  • Well Information
  • Seismic (SEG-Y & Navigation Data)
  • Wireline Logs (LAS files)
  • Digital Files
  • Scanned Images of Database Records
  • Analytical data sets (Geochemistry, Biostratigraphy and Lithology)
  • 3rd Party or internal Well and Concession Databases

Hardware & Software Requirements

GIMS runs in a Windows™ environment and requires only Microsoft SQL™ Server to operate. GIMS can import well, concession, field information from your “scouting” database (e.g. Petroview, IHS Probe).

The GIMS Service

We recognize that many companies do not have full-time data management staff and so GIMS is not just a software product but a Data Management Service. Companies signing up to GIMS get:

  • Use of the GIMS Software with access to support and updates
  • Provision of regular GIMS Data Management Support (cataloguing/data entry)
  • Provision of associated Data Management Services
    • Logs Digitising and Processing
    • Seismic Vectorising
    • Document Scanning
    • GIS Assistance
